Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow and spread to other areas of the body. Benign tumors on the other hand, do not spread. Signs and symptoms may include a lump, unexplainable loss of weight, abnormal bleeding, persistent cough or a mutation of bowel movements. More than a hundred forms of cancer afflict human beings.

About 21% of the deaths due to cancer are due to the initial use of Tobacco. Another 10% are due to a poor diet, especially junk food consumption, obesity, a sedentary life-style or excessive alcoholism. Other causes include exposure to ionizing radiation, environmental pollutants, infections like H. pylori, Hepatitis B and C, HPV infection, Epstein-Barr virus and HIV. These act, at least in part, by altering the genes of the cell. However, many genetic changes need to occur before the development of cancer. Some 5-10% types of cancer occur due to inherited genetic defects from the mother or father of an individual. Cancer can be identified by some signs and symptoms or screening tests. It is then investigated additionally by medical imaging (C.T. scan, M.R.I. and so on) and confirmed by a biopsy.

Many times, cancer can be prevented by avoiding smoking and tobacco chewing, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding or drinking alcohol in moderation, eating more vegetables, fruits and whole grains, getting vaccinated against some of the diseases which mankind has invented vaccines for, avoiding too much processed and red meat and avoiding too much exposure to sunlight. Early detection through screening and immediate treatment is beneficial in cervical and colo-rectal cancer. Cancer is frequently treated with some combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Treatment for the pain and other symptoms are important. Palliative care is of particular importance for people with advanced cancer. The chances of survival depend on the type of cancer and its extent by the time the treatment begins. Homeopathy can heal almost any type of cancer at almost any stage.

Common forms of cancer in men are prostate cancer, lung cancer, colo-rectal cancer and stomach cancer. In women, the common forms of cancer are breast cancer, cervical cancer, colo-rectal cancer and lung cancer. Skin cancer other than melanoma account for around 39% of new cancer cases each year. In children, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and brain tumours are most common, except in Africa where non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is more frequent.The chances of cancer increase with age. The incidences of cancer are increasing as more and more people live upto old age and lifestyle changes are happening in the developing world.
