HIV and AIDS

The HIV or HIV-1, the full form of which is Human immunodeficiency virus 1, is a species of retroviruses infecting humans and responsible for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is a weakened state of the immune system making it vulnerable to multiple opportunistic infections.

Transmitted by several body fluids (blood, vaginal secretions, semen or breast milk), AIDS is today considered a pandemic which caused the death of approximately 32 million people between 1981 (date of the first identification of cases of AIDS ) and 2018. It is estimated that around 1% of people aged 15 to 49 are HIV positive, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa.

The three modes of contamination are therefore:-

• Unprotected sex. Whether they are heterosexual or homosexual, they represent the most important part of contaminations
• Contact with contaminated material in:-
• the drug
• by injection
• tattoos - by poor hygiene of the equipment
• the transfused
• health personnel
• Mother-to-child transmission, during pregnancy, during childbirth and during breast-feeding. Without treatment and with natural childbirth, the transmission rate varies, depending on the study, between 10 and 40%. The risk of infection is highest during childbirth (65% of all cases of infection). Treatment and the possible practice of a caesarean section can lower this figure to 1%.

Although there are antiretroviral treatments that fight HIV and therefore, delay the onset of AIDS, thereby reducing mortality and morbidity, there is currently no vaccine or definitive conventional treatment. The most effective control method therefore remains prevention, which involves, in particular, safe sex and knowledge of one's serological status so as to avoid infecting others.

PATNA : The Doctors attending the ongoing 13th All India Homoeopathy Congress at the S.K. Memorial Hall near Gandhi Maidan here claimed that AIDS could be cured by Homoeopathic medicines. The chairman of Post-graduate committee, Central Council of Homoeopathy (CCH), New Delhi, Dr.D.P. Rastogi, said that recent experiments at the Regional Research Institute of Homoeopathy, Mumbai, showed that AIDS is curable. Three hundred HIV-Positive patients were administered medicines for three months during the experiment. Thereafter, their blood samples were sent for tests at different laboratories, which showed that 15 samples were HIV-negative, said Rastogi.

Note:The time factor of 3 months was too short; if the trial had continued for some more time, more would have been HIV-negative.

Tests or investigations:-

• the classical test to be carried out 6 weeks after taking the risk (Enzyme linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay or ELISA test ): it searches the blood for the presence of anti-HIV antibodies (no need to be fasting to perform this assay in the laboratory). A negative HIV serology carried out in a laboratory 6 weeks after exposure to the virus can be considered as really negative.
• the rapid test to be carried out 12 weeks after taking the risk (Tri-Dot test): a drop of blood is taken from the fingertip, the result is given in 30 minutes. If the result is positive, a standard blood test should be performed to confirm the seropositivity.
• If symptoms are observed despite a negative laboratory test, a more accurate Western Blot test is done for confirmation.
