NAUSEA
Nausea
is the sensation of being about to vomit. Vomiting is the forcible
voluntary or involuntary emptying ("throwing up") of stomach contents
through the mouth.
Nausea can be acute and short-lived, or it can be prolonged. When
prolonged, it is a debilitating symptom. Nausea (and vomiting) can be
psychological or physical in origin.
Cause-
Nausea is not a sickness, but rather a symptom of several conditions,
many of which are unrelated to the stomach. Nausea is often indicative
of an underlying condition elsewhere in the body.
The following causes are given below-
- Acute
HIV infection
- Addison
disease
- Alcohol
- Anxiety
- Appendicitis
- Brain
tumor
- Caffeine
- Cancer
- Chicken
Pox
- Chronic
fatigue syndrome
- Concussion
- Crohn's
disease
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Dizziness
- Drugs,
whether the drug in use is for reasons that are medicinal,
recreational, intentional, and/or unintentional.
- Exercise
- Influenza
(rarely in adults, more commonly in children; not to be confused with
"stomach flu" Gastroenteritis)
- Food
poisoning
- Gastroenteritis
- Gastroesophageal
reflux disease
- Gastroparesis
- Heart
attack
- Hydrocephalus
- Hyperkalemia
- Increased
intracranial pressure
- Irritable
bowel syndrome
- Kidney
failure
- Kidney
stones
- Ménière's
disease
- Meningitis
- Migraine
- Morning
sickness
- Narcotics
- Nervousness
- Pancreatitis
- Peptic
ulcer
- Pneumonia
- Pregnancy
- Sleep
deprivation
- Stress
- Withdrawal
syndrome
- Vertigo
- Vestibular
balance disorder
- Viral
hepatitis
- Menstruation
Diagnosis-
Diagnosis is based on the severity, frequency, and duration of
symptoms, and other factors that could indicate the presence of a
serious illness.
Treatment-
While short-term nausea and vomiting are generally harmless, they may
sometimes indicate a more serious condition, when associated with
prolonged vomiting, it may lead to dehydration and/or dangerous
electrolyte imbalances.
It is important to stay hydrated. Try steady, small amounts of clear
liquids, such as electrolyte solutions. Other clear liquids -- such as
water, ginger ale, or fruit juices -- also work.
Don't drink too much at one time. Stretching the stomach can make
nausea and vomiting worse. Avoid solid foods until there has been no
vomiting for six hours, and then work slowly back to a normal diet.
Pregnant women experiencing morning sickness can eat some crackers
before getting out of bed or eat a high protein snack before going to
bed (lean meat or cheese).
Prevention-
Massage, meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques can help
prevent stress-induced nausea. Anti-nausea medication taken before
traveling can prevent motion sickness. Sitting in the front seat,
focusing on the horizon, and traveling after dark can also minimize
symptoms.
Food should be fresh, properly prepared, and eaten slowly. Overeating,
tight-fitting clothes, and strenuous activity immediately after a meal
should be avoided.
Role of homoeopathy
Homeopathy is based on the principle of "like cures like". The
remedies, which are generally dilutions of natural substances from
plants, minerals, and animals, are selected to specifically match a
person's individual symptom pattern. Homoeopathic medicines help in
boosting the immune system of the patient to treat and/or prevent it.
