Otitis

The ear can be anatomically divided into the outer ear (up to the eardrum), the middle ear and the inner ear. The inner ear is connected to the nasopharynx via the so-called ear trumpet or Eustachian tube and is ventilated through this very access. If the mucous membrane lining the Eustachian tube swells - for example with a cold - the eustachian tube closes. This favours germ colonisation in the inner and middle ear.

Homeopathy as an alternative treatment

Acute otitis media is one of the most common infectious diseases in childhood. It occurs more frequently from December to March. 75-95% of all children develop acute otitis media at least once, 30% even three times and more often. Children between 6 months and 6 years are particularly affected . With otitis media, the mucous membrane that lines the middle ear and covers the inside of the eardrum is inflamed. The clinical picture of an acute otitis media is characterized by fever, earache, hearing impairment and a reduced general condition. The diagnosis is confirmed when the pediatrician determines the typical changes in the eardrum in the ear: it becomes red and bulged, and possibly also perforated.

Conventional treatment

• Nasal drops to reduce swelling
• Antibiotics to prevent "superinfection"
• Antipyretic agents, if applicable,
• Pain relievers to reduce earache,
• Agents to thicken the mucus, if necessary 

Problems of Conventional Therapy

The decongestant nasal drops can have effects on the entire organism, such as an increase in blood pressure and a faster heartbeat. If overdosed, they can even lead to respiratory paralysis in babies. Long-term use (> 2-3 weeks) can damage the nasal mucous membrane.

The antibiotics can cause allergies up to shock-like reactions (anaphylaxis), skin rashes and digestive problems can occur, and with some active substances also blood disorders. In general, diarrhea is one of the most common side effects of antibiotic therapy. In addition, fungal infections occur more frequently after taking antibiotics. Another problem is the emergence of resistant germs with frequent use of antibiotics.

• Apis Mellifica (honey bee)
• Aconitum Napellus (monkshood)
• Belladonna (deadly nightshade)
• Chamomilla (German chamomile)
• Pulsatilla pratensis (passion flower)

Central question

Is there an alternative to antibiotics for treating acute otitis media? - This is a question that not only countless mothers ask themselves. The Munich pediatrician Sigrid Kruse pursued it in her doctoral thesis (Sigrid Kruse: Otitis Media in Children. Homeopathic Therapy versus Conventional Therapy, Stuttgart: Hippokrates 1998). 

Results

The therapy was, in the homeopathic treatment group A, significantly shorter than in the conventionally treated group B. In the follow-up within a year, no significant difference between the two groups was found, however, the group A treated with Homeopathy had fewer relapses (recurrences)!

Assessment

The course of acute otitis in children who were treated either with antibiotics or homeopathically was compared. The homeopathic remedy was selected depending on the prevailing symptoms.

In particular, it was examined what influence the different treatments had on:

• the duration of the earache,
• the duration of the therapy,
• the frequency of relapse within one year.

The course of the disease was examined at the following intervals:

• 2-4 days after the initial consultation
• 7 days later
• 14 days later
• 2 months later
• 1 year later

The data from a total of 131 children were evaluated. 103 children received homeopathic treatment, 28 children were treated with antibiotics.
