Meditation has been practised for over 5000 years as a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, "thinking" mind into a deeper state of relaxation and peace. Most of the meditation practices often involve turning the entire attention on to a single point or reference. There are many kinds of meditative disciplines that encompass a huge spectrum of breathing meditation, relaxation meditation, healing meditation, psychophysical as well as spiritual practices that may emphasize to achieve different objectives from the achievement of higher states of consciousness, creativity, self-awareness, complete mental peace or tranquility. Chanting of 'Mantras', is also a kind of meditation that gives spectacular results to the meditator. For example, my son has a Chakra (divine whorl) on his back, because I was chanting the Mantra, 'Om Namo Bhagavathae Vaasudaevaaya', when making love to my wife, just before he was conceived (for a snap, e-mail us on dr_ramanand@rediffmail.com).
