Homeopathy is a natural, healing system of medicine in which those affected by illness are treated with substances in high dilution that, in large quantities, trigger the same symptoms in healthy people. It essentially stimulates the natural healing processes of the body to heal the diseased individual.
Homeopathy is derived from the Greek, “homoios” meaning similar and “pathos” meaning suffering. Taken literally, homeopathy means “similar suffering”.
Homeopathy as a form of therapy covers the patient and his or her individual needs as a whole.
Homeopathy has two main principles: the stimulus and regulation principle and the similarity principle. Homeopathy has been based on them unchanged since the beginning until today. When used correctly, the similarity principle enables the selection of the appropriate homeopathic medicine, which, after administration, should provide the stimulus for subsequent reaction and healing.
The stimulus and regulation principle
In homeopathy, the individual person is seen as a holistic system that is out of balance when suffering from illness. According to the experience of homeopathic doctors, this system can be regulated and brought back into balance using targeted stimuli. Homeopathic medicines are able to provide such stimuli with potentised doses of a remedy. Potentisation is of two types: 1. Succussion which means repeated dilution with a liquid and shaking of a remedy so that it generates and stores electro-magnetic energy as potential energy and 2. Trituration which means the same done with a soilid base - usually sugar of milk. As a stimulation and regulation therapy, homeopathy is understood to have the power to stimulate the body's own self-healing powers. This makes it possible for homeopathy to heal diseased individuals naturally.
The similarity principle
Another basic principle of homeopathy is the principle of similarity. It says that a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person can cure similar symptoms in a sick person. The founder of homeopathy Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843) summed up this principle with the maxim, “Similia similibus curentur” (Latin for “Like may be cured by like”).
Regulation of Homeopathy
In India, there are more than 200,000 registered practitioners of homeopathy and it is one of the "National Systems of Medicine" under the Department of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy); in India, it is illegal to practice as a homeopath without a license and professional qualifications.
In the U.S.A., there is also a separate certification process available only to MDs (Medical Doctors) and DOs (Doctors of Osteopathy) and naturopathic physicians also have a homeopathic certifying agency.
In France, Spain and Argentina, most professionals that prescribe remedies are MDs. Other countries like India and Pakistan have exclusively homeopathic medical schools, some (including Germany) have naturopathic colleges with homeopathy as part of the curriculum, and some certify, "professional homeopaths" who have attended homeopathic schools and then pass examinations that grant, "certification". In Germany, Medical Doctors can also get a post-graduate diploma, the "DZVhÄ" and practice homeopathy.
A study has shown that extreme Homeopathic dilutions contain nano-particles of the original starting material - click here to see that.
