What is an anal fistula?

An anal fistula is a channel from inside the anus — the hole from which the solid waste of your body comes out — to any point/s in the skin around it. It generally happens after an infection which did not heal correctly. A doctor can repair the fistula only by a surgery. Causes

When the glands inside the anus which secrete fluid get blocked or clogged, bacteria may infect a swollen pocket of tissue and liquid to form an “abscess”.

If this is not treated correctly, it keeps growing and finally, it breaks open forming a small hole at a point on the skin somewhere near the anus. The fistula is this connection between the gland/s and that opening.

Symptoms

• Pain (called “dolor” by doctors)
• Redness (called “calor” by doctors)

• Painful bowel movements (defaecation) or urination
• Fever
• A foul-smelling fluid oozing out of a hole near the anus

Diagnosis

The doctor will do a physical examination and ask about your medical history.

Fistulae can be diagnosed on sight by a doctor most of the time – any sign of oozing of blood or any other fluid help make it easier. The doctor may even insert a finger or two to diagnose the fistula or fistulae.

Occasionally, imaging tests like X-rays or a CT scan may be needed, especially if a surgery is what you want. You may need a colonoscopy also, in which a tube with a camera is inserted into the anus to look inside. This is done under anaesthesia and so, no pain is felt.

Treatment:
